Kyoto: Ryozen Kannon

On our visit to the Kodaiji temple, we made a brief stop at the nearby Ryozen Kannon. Located in Kyoto's Higashiyama district, Ryozen Kannon is a war memorial commemorating the War Dead.

10 years after the end of World War II in, the Ryozen Kannon was built in memory of the soldiers on both sides who had died in the Pacific War. The concrete and steel statue of Kannon (Avalokitesvara) is 24 meters tall and weighs about 500 tons. The statue was unveiled on 8th June 1955. 
The shrine beneath the Kannon statue features an image of the Eleven Faced Kannon (Ekadasamukha). The names of all the victims who died in World War II are engraved on wooden tablets are stored here. 
A small memorial to the unknown soldiers is also present.
Many Buddhist statues, an imprint of the Buddha's feet and other Buddhist shrines can be seen in the temple precincts.
